asper has come a long way from the frst
homes of the early immigrants who crossed
the North Platte River at the ferry crossing
in the mid 19th century. In 1859, the mass migration
of land seekers along the Oregon, Mormon and Cali-
fornia trails, built a small settlement on the banks of
the river at the former site of Fort Caspar near the
original ferry location. By an inadvertent misspelling
of the name Caspar by an offcial, the town of Casper
was born.
